The Iceman

Dean Malenko, The Man of 1,000 Holds

Many people probably never realize just how good a worker and what a good shooter Dean Malenko truly was. I also probably didn’t give him enough credit or emphasize just how much of an impact he had on my training and my wrestling career. He played a huge part in my early training. If Dean was, “The Man of 1,000 Holds” he probably taught me 999. The best one he ever taught me was my finishing move, “The Northern Lights Suplex.” Okay, I know it’s more of a move than a hold but you get my drift. I used to kid him that he probably actually knew a million and one holds and moves. He told me how they had let him use it in Japan, and taught me because I could do a good wrestling bridge. He encouraged me to give it try and see what happened. He said that it would be a great finishing move to use in the US as many people, even those in the business, hadn’t even seen it yet. It took a lot of training for me to actually perform the move as smoothly as I eventually did. Not only did I work on it in the ring every chance I could, I also had the bright idea that I could benefit from using a thicker gymnastics mat and using a smaller person to practice or train on. I eventually perfected it using a kid I knew who was like in the 6th grade. He thought it was fun to get whipped over as the other kids looked on. I had it in the back of my mind before I finally debuted and executed it on a Smoky Mountain Wrestling TV taping. I did it on a young Robbie Eagle, who eventually went on to WCW Super–stardom as, “The Maestro.” I remember being in the ring with Robbie and blocking his German suplex before slipping under his arm and hooking him with the move. Jim Cornette was doing commentary along with Bob Caudle during that match. Everyone knows what a heel manager Jimmy is and out of nowhere he broke character when he “popped” for my finish. “He just did a Northern Light Suplex. Blaze wins the match with a Northern Lights Suplex,” or something to that effect. Of course I didn’t know this until I watched the playback but I do know it was pretty exciting to do it for the first time in a match. It had worked and I looked damn good doing it. That’s not me boasting, that’s me being real. No one had done it on TV in the US at that time and it would be a couple of years before others were doing it, at least on a national level.
